This is to inform all that I'm fading away, I'm dying.
Bwwahahaha! I'm dying to hit an OAT(Open Air Theater) filled with frenzied people who crave for rock, an audi(auditorium) having no more room, a playground where all present are into a state of disarrayed dizziness yet, a feeling that can only be matched by something like attaining nirvana...
When on earth will there be a Rock Fest/Show/Competition (I give not a damn to what you call it!) worth attending, in Delhi?
Ever since February, after attending a rather avoidable one at NSIT( its Nshit actually, but for decency sake, I avoided mentioning that, didnt I?), I've been left wanting to go into complete delirium, wanting to attend a carnival of rock music! Alas, I'm still waiting!
Forget about Metallica coming to Delhi, Bruce Dickinson living up to his promise of coming back to India again and Megadeth "Rocking in India" once more, when will the Parikramas, the Dem Clones, the Vaayus , the Prestorikas, the Cyanides, the Decibels and others of the like take stage again?
You must be thinking I'm crazy, right?
Yeah, I'm crazy about rock music because :
1) Instruments are key to most of it. Guitar driven music is simply the only way as far as I'm concerned. Making little beats on your techno machines and synthetic stuff just isn't good music. And hey, a beatbox ain't no set of drums!
2) Versatility. Isn't it great that with the same singer, the same instruments and the same band, bands can come up with a beautiful ballad and a thrashing masterpiece? The ability that bands have to decide their styles and how they play greatly enhances all bands.
3) Realism. Now I can't speak for EVERY band and artist out there, so don't give me crap about some rap group you like that doesn't fit the general trash talking stereotype, or some pop artist who is totally creative, because I won't deny them a little tiny bit of credit here and there. But rock music is great emotionally, MOST writers aren't idiots. They don't spit out about their gangs and their ho's and all that through entire albums. Bands have EMOTIONS, unlike artists like Britney and dare I say, 50 Cent. They have a sense of belonging. There is a story about each one of them. And believe me, you can associate with most of them.
4) Decent Lyrics. No, not every rock band has a great poet. But the ones that do are worth paying every bit of your attention to. I don't see anything creative about "oh baby this" and "oh baby that". I won't stand that at all.
Guess, with DU starting soon, my wait should not last long. Till then, the jukebox is my only hope!
For those about to rock, I salute you!!
~Cheerio!
PS- In case you know of some upcoming ones you would do a great favour by telling me about it.
It'll be of great convenience if its free of cost though! *chuckle*

22 Wisecracks!:
hey mancunian.. nice goin.. but i'd love 2 see all those bands come 2 del man.... n hw bout inditing on manutd in ur next blog.. manutd over da last5yrs?? wa say?
Oh sure!
Thanks for suggesting a nice topic for my next post!
Very illuminating...your thoughts....but dont you think that sterotyping is not correct.....hell hip hop and rap sells almost as gud as rock....and anyways i believe you should listen to what you like.....not just stagnate the kind of music you listen to.....sticking to one kind of genre....i could any day listen to metallica and the foo fighters but would enjoy chamillionaire and paul wall as much....
well...on the subject of rap...i totally agree with you coz all they do is banter on about their ho's and their bling...but i'm just not into heavy metal...kind of makes me unbalanced with all that crashing sound in my ears....but i do loove soft rock like nirvana(only heard the song 'the man who sold the world' & liked it),amy lee, avril, alanis, shakira,etc...wat draws me more towards genres like pop, gospel, blues and r&b is that strong vocals are more important to me..hence i prefer christina, jessica, mariah, whitney....but i do like ur passion for ur idol...just like me...coz i'm always ready to fight for christina...lol...
good blog though..and i do wish more singers would come to delhi rather than just going back after touching mumbai & bangalore.....
@ Harvijay
To each his own, mate!
I have no problems whatsoever with people liking rap,pop,blues.etc..
after all its ones own choice!
Dream Theater is one progressive-rock band which makes amazing music and it cant boast of a very good vocalist. Some people like the lyrics, some like the music. You like Christina Aguilera, I like Iron Maiden, as simple as that!
BTW, Shakira is NOT rock, by any stretch of imagination!!
And yeah, its high time Delhi got its due.
@ Bhalu/Ballu :P
Oh yeah, stereotyping in any form is not correct. I completely agree with you on this point, one should listen to what is music to his/her ears!
I in no way intend to colour any ones choices.
Its just my opinion.
And yeah, maybe im just missing rock shows too much! :)
@ Bhalu
As an after thought,You mentioned that rap sold as good as rock.
Rap and hip hop selling good doesnt mean anything. I'm not exactly aware of the stats, but I think its a lot to do with what gets played on the TV and the radio these days. While you might argue that its a question of demand ans supply, I say its a question of language, here in India atleast.
And you might not know that Rock concerts abroad ge by far the largest audience, way more than pop or hip hop or rap ones.
But then again, its completely your choice!
frankly i completely agree wid u atleast rock music has soul if nothing else and its soooooooo mcuh bttr dan rap for sure(no offence to anyone).....d lyrics rock nd if its sort rock lets just say it can take u to heaven if ntn else....Gud goin dude!!!am so proud of u....
It can take you to heaven and send you into a total frenzy all the same!
Thanks for your comments(more so because your views coincided with me ;-) ), Niki!
saks, control yourself
before starting off, want to say i am a metal fan
now for the blog..
no need to generalize, if you dont like britney and 50 cents singing "oh baby" etc etc, then you should bother to check up on other artists as well who in the pop, r&b and hip hop genres that DO have soul.
and contrasting to what you say, there are bands in rock as well which have meaningless and plain nonsensical lyrics, and i am not even referring to the black and death metal bands.
It is what a person feels in a genre.. and likes in the way it is sung, not always what is sung.
Just for your knowledge hip hop and pop outsell rock as a whole by millions and millions of albums yet rock has a niche market and bands are able to become internationally acclaimed and known. So its not just about the sales nor is it fair to compare them on the basis of that.
next, the bands and artists dont come here in delhi for lack of government support.
1stly, the duties are huge on them performing, so a large chunk of revenue is lost in duties itself (read upto 30%)
2ndly, delhi is the most corrupt metro in the country. we both know how people like to get everything for free and use their "contacts" for buying a special edition tooth-brush, so getting into a concert of world famous artist/band obviously has more weightage
and lastly, i would have been surprised if you hadnt displayed the Baniya Syndrome in the last line of the Blog
:P
cheers!!
i wont say much abt d post due to lack of knowledge/sense of judgement for any band...im more of d individual song kinda person...bt u cud go check out cafe morrison....dont kno hw well itll go wid ur "baniya syndrome" (quotin adi) but its pretty gud! n il rem who to inform d next time ders nethin worthwhile at Polo grounds.
Wow! Now I have someone in DU to keep me updated!
Thanks Prerna!
Oh and yeah, Ive been to Cafe Morrison(the south ex one, right?)
and its the not the Baniya Syndrome that came in the way, it was the place itself.
@ Adi
Why should I go and search for pop/rap/whatever which makes sense when I know that the most frequently heard ones are not worth listening(its not just about being lazy here!)? Also, because rock's not dying, such a need shouldnt arise i feel.
Second, if you read carefully, which I believe ou did, I wrote that "most" of the rock bands make sense. I never mentioned "all".
Well said, I too believe that sales is not the thing we should rely on when judging the quality of music.
Yeah, I know why people dont come to Delhi. Once it so happened that Simon Webbe of Blue fame got rained with spoons and plates and what not at some pub. So there.
And can YOU please not accuse me of having weird syndromes(actually I am lawfully permitted to suffer with such ones, courtesy to that name "Agarwal" attached to me). You dont even have to carry any such baggage, and you still manage to be 'Baniya'. :D
hey saksham!!!
shakira is definitely rock even if she hasnt shown that side in her oral fixation albums...
but her previous albums were all rock..or rock-fusion more like..
but "Donde Estan Los Ladrones?" and "Pies Descalzos" were rock albums...(as certified by the grammy association)...
@ Harvijay
Ok, I concede, wont argue with you about Shakira being rock or not due to lack of knowledge on my part. But, she's not the kind of rock I'm talking about here!
thats ok....
coz rock is a very broad category of music....
even some songs of pop singers are rock.......
Shakira!!! Rock..!! dude I genuinely respect your commitment towards music owing to the fact that after writing a "right frm the heart" blog abt the kind u music u love, u r patiently replying to these ppl who very mundanely term rock music as music "with nonsense lyrics" or music where vocals have no importance..! i would take a minute to advice my discerning friends that plzzz for heaven's sake do not talk abt stuff you don't know.. For example@ Harvijay:I can give you atleast 50 artists here coming under "rock" genre (the real rock genre not the shakira-ish rock) who are hell lot better than britney spears/christina aguillera! And i would advice you to watch britney performing LIVE and Dream Theather/maiden performing LIVE and decide fr yourself!! (She doesnt even sing at her concerts, its mainly lipsync)! @SAKSHAM
I would have abstained from this genre debate but somehow these queries after your well written blog prompted the eruption!!! Anyways!! With all due respect to every music lover!!
Cheers!!!
@saks
nah, i didnt expect you to check up which pop/R&B/hip hop artists do have soul.
but my point was, you get mixed kind of artists every where, in all genres. And you cant dislike a genre itself based on some you dont like.
simple.
if someone tells me that Rock is just "noise", it annoys me no end, coz i know which bands to listen and which ones to ignore.
and that makes the distinction between someone who loves music for itself or someone who listens just for the heck of it.
Besides this topic is way too old to deserve more attention than i have already given it :P
@ Adi
Couldn't agree more with you mate.
Put in a very precise manner.
To each his own, in any case!
@ All
The words from the master, Manu say it all!
The lyrics of most of the rock songs make more sense than MOST of the other stuff.
Thank you, Manu Sir! :)
Dude!posting on ur blog with first the comments reachin u for approval, takes away that element of surprise and also destroys dissent coz u will pick and choose what sort of comments fall under ur volition.
